Fisher and the SGA have proven themselves capable change agents, and we encourage them to revel in this triumph.

However, the details are still up in the air, and Ludman's e-mail indicates that in drafting policy guidelines, the Office of Housing and Residence Life will seek input from the Residence Hall Association and the SGA. It ain't over 'til it's over, folks. The student body and the SGA should continue to see this see this one through to the end.

Colleges are bureaucracies, and when student action cuts through the layers and changes a core value, everybody wins. For a generation often called lazy, stupid and civically unconcerned, this is a teaching moment: Things can change, and we can do the changing. There's no reason such a capable group of students should fall victim to nihilism.

The only question: Why did such a logical change for one of the nation's most gay-friendly schools take so long? Over 50 U.S. institutions around the country were far ahead of us. Now, we can only hope that many more will follow.
