They also find inspiration in classic Chinese literature. "A Single Drop of Red is a term borrowed from the highly respected school of Wudang longsword," said Smith, referring to the culture of the people of the Wudang Mountains in China. "The phrase basically means, 'Only draw your sword to defend life. And once drawn, end the conflict in a single, fatal thrust.'"
The album offers fans three new songs to feast upon: "Graveyard Stickshift," "No You Don't," and the title track. It also features two previously released tracks, "Collide" from Guitar Hero II and "Blood Doll," from Rock Band.
The second half of the EP contains six previously released tracks that have been remixed by friends of Smith's and von Buhler. With strong chaotic beats and heavy resonating guitars, A Single Drop of Red is as complex as it is dark.
At times, however, their macabre lyrics seem slightly insincere and over the top. The words "blood" and "hell" can only be mentioned so many times before the "I hate everything" message gets old. But the talent involved in the violent melodies make up for any excessively morbid vibes.
The band has already started on their next project, The Art of War. The upcoming disc will be Anarchy Club's second full-length album release and according to Smith, it's the band's heaviest recording yet. But while Club's fans sit around and wait for War, they can kill some time with this superb EP.
It is important to Anarchy Club that there is a message to their work.
"Our songs may be dark in tone," said Smith, "but in the end the good guy almost always wins, the bad guys get what they deserve, and there's always light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark it seems."
The 21+ show starts at 8 p.m. March 7 at The Church on Kilmarnock St. in Boston.
