Kyle Weber, a sophomore at Emerson, will get to sleep an extra five minutes because of the decrease in stops on the B Line, making her daily commute to Emerson a little bit smoother.

The Greycliff Road, Mount Hood, Summit Avenue and Fordham Road stops on the BC Green Line were all eliminated when the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and passengers on April 20, 2004 made the unanimous decision that the B Line is too long and too crowded.

The usual grumble about the B Line is, "Why are there so many stops on the B Line? Get rid of some, but not mine," Joe Pesaturo, the press secretary for the MBTA, said.

The final decision to eliminate the stops was based on the number of people boarding and their proximity to stops, he said.

At a public meeting held last fall to discuss the overcrowded B Line, Pesaturo said no one was identified as a student even though many students live along the B Line.

Pesaturo said there are currently no plans to test other MBTA lines to see if additional stops on C, D and E lines should be closed.

Boston University currently has three stops on the B Line.

"This seems to contribute to the delays," said Elisa Smilovitz, a freshman film major who uses the B Line to visit friends living in the Allston area. "They do not need three stops."

The BU West, BU Central and BU East stops, however, won't be removed, Pesaturo said. "They were just newly renovated," he said. "And the traffic volume in these areas is extremely high."

Over the next few months, Pesaturo said the MBTA will be watching trip times very closely through the addition of a supervisor to help further study and reduce travel times on the B Line.

"The goal is to maintain a better schedule," he said.
