Sinful Saints fan, finite seating inflame rivalry

Tension in the Piano Row gymnasium rose last night as the rival Emerson and Emmanuel basketball teams faced off once again, with tides of support from both teams' cheering squads erupting as one Emmanuel fan was ejected from the arena. The Lions managed an 82-79 win over the first-ranked Saints, who Emerson Coach Hank Smith said have been an ever-increasing presence in the league.

Eighteen Emerson T-shirts were shoplifted from the college's Barnes & Noble bookstore in two separate incidents this month, according to Emerson Public Safety officials. Lt. Eric Schiazza said on Feb. 2, four red and blue shirts made by Jones & Mitchell Sportswear Inc.

Gov. Deval Patrick announced a proposal this month that would allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities. To circumvent a State Legislature that, after heated debate in the Senate, failed to pass the same bill in 2006, Patrick will have to draft a regulation, which may be used in place of the law it resembles until it can fully pass into legislation.

Many 18-year-old students run for office in their high school's student government association. Having already accomplished that, a future organizational and political communication major at Emerson is now campaigning for a seat on a town-wide committee. James Warren, currently a senior at Ludlow High School in Ludlow, Mass.
